Mobile payment options have gained popularity in checkout lines across America as fast and convenient ways to pay. But does that popularity carry over into paying more regular bills, like utilities, internet, and credit card payments? Yes, says a recent report by InvoiceCloud.

Popularity of Mobile Bill Pay Rises 16% in the Past Year

InvoiceCloud’s annual report, “The 2026 State of Online Payments,” surveyed 2,000 Americans’ digital billing preferences and found that “45% now prefer to use mobile bill pay, up from 29% last year.” Paying bills via a computer was preferred by 17% of customers, while mailed checks, in-person payments, and other options were in the single digits.

However, preferences did not always align with the channels customers actually used to pay their bills. Over the last year, choosing all survey options that applied, 68% had paid bills via a mobile device, 45% had paid via a computer, 24% had paid via an automated phone system, 20% had mailed a check, 17% had paid by speaking with a live agent, and 15% had paid in person.

24/7 Payment Options Could Be Useful for Nearly a Quarter of Those Surveyed

The report reveals that 60% of customers paid their bills at the same time each month, but almost 25% paid bills when they remembered to do so or received a reminder. This could make 24/7 digital payment options a particularly convenient offering for that group.

In addition, most surveyed preferred to pay with debit cards (44%) or credit cards (27%), while only 9% preferred to pay with digital wallets.
